Reflecting on the Turkey Club

Image
America’s delicacy item, the turkey club, is a problem. Or I should say that one of its products is a problem. And that product is bacon. The bacon production is taking a bigger toll on American lands than ever imagined. So let’s consider it on some different scales.  On a national and global scale, some actions can be taken to reduce the environmental impacts of bacon. To give a little context of bacon on a global scale, in 2022 there was a reported 34 billion dollars in the export of bacon. Exports of bacon are going to countries such as China, the United States, Japan, Canada, and Denmark. One solution to this issue would be to reduce exports. Whether that be adding a higher tax or vamping up the price of bacon, it could be the answer to solving many issues. Such as reducing greenhouse gases, reducing transportation impacts, and reducing a carbon footprint. On a more local scale, many more actions can be taken to reduce environmental impacts. The biggest issue, especially on Ame...

The Hidden Costs of a Turkey Club

Image
Who knew one of America’s delicacy items, the Turkey Club, could have such an environmental impact? Some of the classic ingredients of the sandwich include turkey, bacon, and a special addition of ham. These products were bought at a local grocery store, ALDI. The bacon is produced from Aldi’s Appleton Farms which is sourced from pigs inside the U.S. Controversy struck recently that the bacon may be made from cells inside a lab. But who knows? The ham is an ALDI brand and is said to come from regional farms near the area. As for the turkey, I went with the Hillshire brand which is said to be produced with authentic turkey raised with no hormones. Bacon and ham productions are quite similar as they come from the same animal and possibly from the same farm. The production of one slice of bacon is also the production of manure, which ends up being 80 times the weight of the strip! On these industrial pig farms, manure is stored in large open-air spaces and then sprayed ...

Introducing A Meal

Recently for myself, I decided to make a club sandwich with a few extra special additions.   I first started the sandwich with Italian bread. Before adding the ingredients, I decided to use some oil in a pan to toast the bread.  After toasting, I used some mayo. I first added some vegetables such as lettuce and tomato. On top of that, I added both salt and pepper. One special addition included cheese, specifically Swiss cheese. It was then time to add the protein. I used bacon, turkey, and ham.  Lastly, I paired it with diced potatoes. I prepared these by dicing up the potatoes and cooking them with oil, salt, and pepper.

Stealing Our Earth, One Bag At a Time

Thinking Geographically about Environmental Impacts While plastic bags account for a multitude of waste on our planet, I would like to focus specifically on the African City of Nairobi. The plastic bag issue is no longer minor, but controlling a better part of the city. The bags have entered into waterways, causing water to stop flowing. Likewise, the land is becoming useless for agricultural purposes. Not only is this taking away from natural resources, but it’s also posing health risks to residents. When it rains, moisture is created in these trapped plastic bags, attracting slews of mosquitos. In Mumbai, India, compelling efforts have taken off in attempting to manage the issue of plastic bags. One way is through the direct force of anti-bag police. Each morning, police are sent out to keep the “thin” bags off the streets. The “thin” bags have been claimed as illegal in the city. Their first stop is the local market, the heart of the city. Here, they calibrate the thin bags and...
